I totally never would have made these connections!!! Hilarious and brilliant. When it comes to composers, I will typically ask: "Is this a Hans Zimmer joint?" Because...why not? But you're right...I would have to do a deep scroll to come up with a fistful of Brits. Do you think all that French snobbery (real or not) is coming back to historically haunt them so that most of the world is all, "Matisse? Never heard of it. Is that a car?" :) I await the next installment! :)
You nailed it, all this French ooh la la, let them eat cake stuff is coming back to bite them in the derriere ( )( ) They've been having a hard time over there lately, but honestly jeez I am both Francophile and Anglophile in the end!!
Snorting out my afternoon coffee through my nostrils at your Matisse and Zimmer bons mots, comme d'habitude!!
I really enjoyed how you linked so many different things together to make a case for the French. I also really enjoyed how light-hearted and fun your writing is - it’s a pleasure to read.
Thanks as always Michael! I love your stuff too; there are not too many folks I encounter even virtually much less IRL who can throw down at philosophy. And if we are also talking about Aussie skateboarders, well for me that makes you a sample of N= 1 🇦🇺🛹
But it's the sample sizes of one, the outliers, the people and events that are in the tail ends of a highly kurtotic population distribution, that provide the spice of life!
That was such a lovely comment - I’ve never been called an N=1 before and it legit just made my day.
And incase you interested, soon enough (when I get the words to play ball) I’ll be dropping some skateboarding pieces (or maybe even a new substack just for my skate pieces - the decisions are yet to be finalised...)
Either way, I totally agree it’s the outliers -- i.e., the ones who write about big decorative wall cutlery, Philippino dance parties, funny pieces in defence of the French, and who drop words like ‘kurtotic’ (I’m about to look that up) — that make up the spice of life.
#ThisIsWhyWeSubstack (that’s my new favourite hashtag)
I would be SO into your skateboarding pieces! We (Filipina chicks in particular Margielyn Didal) did SO well at the last Olympics, we were in the final group. I was so proud of her, representing us so well. If I remember correctly, Tony Hawk said how she was all the other skateboarders' favorite because she was so cheerful and encouraging. Always ready with the hugs or shoulder to cry on if there was a wipeout. It's making me beam with pride and have a tear in my eye, how the young Filipinos are carrying on the reputation that we have around the world for our friendliness and joy :D
OK, well let me know when that's out Michael, and I'm glad I could teach you a new word about statistics plus a new hashtag ;) Let's keep making it go intercontinental!
Yeah I saw her, she was great, so good at skating and so friendly. It’s so wonderful the kids these days get to represent their countries (and all their countries embody) in skateboarding - it’s amazing to see for an old skater like me.
Thanks Marmi, I’ll let you know.
And it’s an awesome word - I looked it up, now I’ve gotta find a way to use it in a piece of writing haha.

🥸 I can’t wait to see where you go with this next! Viva la Viva!!! 👩🏽🎨
Great read Marmi

Agreed intercontinental for the win. :)
